Quick Tip #1 – Club Soda and Bitters – 2012 Update

Bitters having come from medicinal roots have an ancient  reputation as a heath tonic.  Snake oil pushers once upon a time would claim that bitters cured everything from gout to indigestion.  Although we can no longer make these claims bitters are making a huge comeback along with the classic cocktails.   Aside from full-blown cocktails you can enjoy bitters simply mixed with club soda; the particular and pungent flavors in the bitters open up and are more easily appreciated this way.  Bartenders have long touted this mixture as a hangover cure, but sometimes I just like to have a sophisticated drink in my hand even when I am not drinking.

Quick Tip #1

I often have to drive and must maintain sobriety.  Lately I have been ordering an old-school bartender hangover remedy.

Club soda and bitters.

Sure, most of us order club soda to have a low-calorie non-alcoholic drink and yes bitters are mostly 45%ABV.  A dash or two of bitters will add an interesting flavor to your soda and a very, very small (a dash) amount of  alcohol.  I like it.  Any bitters should do the trick and even a wedge of lime can be nice.  I imagine that this also is way healthier than a regular or diet soda.

Gin, tonic and bitters is even better. Not sure how it would help sobriety though.

I love grapefruit bitters in a gin and tonic, but I can’t drink all the time.

I’m addicted to 4 or 5 dashes of Peychaud’s in Coke. It’s my go to non-alcoholic drink. Also, lemon bitters in soda water is very refreshing, more so than fresh lemon even. The concentrated lemon oils really pack a lot of flavor.

I quite often drink just bitters & tonic. I’ll have to try ‘em with soda.

Aperol and soda is also refreshing and fairly low alcohol – you need more than a dash, though.
